如果有人问你：What's your pet name in your family?千万别以为对方是想知道你家猫猫狗狗的名字是什么。
其实，这是一个经典的“误解”表达。pet表示宠物，pet name却不是宠物的名字，理解错了可是很搞笑。
为什么？因为pet name指的是人的昵称，和宠物名字不能说是一模一样，只能说是毫不相干。

pet name的英文解释是：
a special name you call someone who you like very much
你给你非常喜欢的人起的一个特别的名字
在urban dictionary上，对pet name是这样解释的：
Generally used in intimate relationships in place of names. The names are usually thought of based on experience of the relationship.
通常用在亲密关系中，代替原有的姓名，而昵称的选择则根据具体的关系来定。
比如babe，sweetie，honey，sweetheart和dear也不是谁想叫就能叫的。
有些人特别不喜欢昵称，希望没人提及自己的昵称，因为这可能显得有失身份。

Tim and Tina have started using the pet names on each other.
蒂姆和蒂娜已经开始叫双方各自的昵称了。
A pet name is a special name given by your dear friends or families.
爱称是由你亲爱的朋友或家人给你起的一个特殊的名字。
与pet name类似的表达还有pet phrase，意为“口头禅”（catchword）。
另外，pet一词本身就有比较亲昵的意思——宝贝，即“（表示喜欢、友好的称呼）宝贝、乖乖”，英文解释是：Some people call the person they are talking to 'pet' to show affection or friendliness.

It's all right, pet, let me do it.
没事儿，宝贝儿，让我来吧。
当pet作动词时，则有“抚摸；（爱抚地）摩挲"的意思，即If you pet a person or animal, you touch them in an affectionate way.
例句：
The policeman reached down and petted the wolfhound.
警察伸手抚摸那只猎狼犬。
I petted and smoothed her hair.
我轻抚着捋平她的头发。
